The risk most professionals face is not that AI takes their job outright. It is that a colleague or competitor who uses AI well starts producing more, faster and at higher quality, and that difference becomes visible in every review, proposal and deadline. The tools are available to everyone. The advantage comes from the workflows people build around them.
That is why treating ChatGPT, Claude or Microsoft Copilot as “write this for me” buttons misses the point. Used well, they are work amplifiers: they take on drafting, summarizing, checking and first-pass analysis so a person can spend their time on judgment and relationships. What the research actually shows
Two of the most cited studies give a realistic picture. In a large field study of customer support agents, economists Erik Brynjolfsson, Danielle Li and Lindsey Raymond found that access to a generative AI assistant increased the number of issues resolved per hour by about 14% on average, with gains of around 34% for novice and lower-skilled workers. The AI effectively spread the know-how of top performers to everyone else.
A 2023 experiment with 758 Boston Consulting Group consultants, run with researchers from Harvard and other schools, found that for tasks within AI’s capabilities, consultants using GPT-4 completed 12.2% more tasks, 25.1% faster, with significantly higher quality. But on a task deliberately chosen to fall outside the model’s abilities, consultants using AI were 19 percentage points less likely to reach the correct answer than those working without it. The authors called this the “jagged frontier”: AI is excellent at some tasks and misleading at others that look similar.
The lesson is not “use AI for everything.” It is that people who learn where the frontier lies, and build workflows on the right side of it, gain a real and compounding edge.
Where high performers use AI every day
Routine communication and admin
Drafting customer emails and follow-ups, summarizing meetings, turning notes into reports and building reusable templates. Individually small, these tasks add up to hours each week, and AI handles first drafts of them well.
Writing and content
Marketing copy, proposals, sales scripts, documentation and social posts. The difference between average and strong users is iteration: strong users outline, draft, critique and revise with the model in several rounds rather than accepting the first answer.
Coding and technical work
Developers use tools such as GitHub Copilot and chat assistants to debug, refactor, write tests, generate API calls and explain unfamiliar legacy code. Non-engineers use the same tools to write spreadsheet formulas, small scripts and automations, or to sanity-check the logic of a process.
Sales and marketing
Research on a prospect before a call, personalized outreach, persona-specific messaging, competitive briefs and repurposing one piece of content across channels. The value is scalable precision: tailoring that used to be too time-consuming to do for every account.
Analysis and decision support
Interpreting data, summarizing research, exploring scenarios and stress-testing a plan by asking the model to argue the other side. This is also where the jagged frontier bites hardest, so conclusions need checking against the underlying numbers.
How to build AI into your own workflow
A practical approach for an individual professional:
- Audit your week. List the tasks that consume the most time and sort them into drafting, summarizing, researching, analyzing and deciding.
- Start with drafts and summaries. These sit well inside the frontier and deliver the quickest wins.
- Save what works. Keep a personal library of prompts, examples and templates for recurring tasks.
- Iterate rather than one-shot. Give context, ask for options, critique the output and refine.
- Verify anything factual. Treat numbers, names, citations and code behavior as unconfirmed until checked.

Knowing where the frontier lies
The hardest skill is not prompting; it is judging when AI output can be trusted. Some reliable signals that a task sits inside the frontier: the answer can be checked quickly, the task is mostly about language or structure rather than new facts, and a plausible-but-wrong result would be caught before it caused harm. Warning signs point the other way: the task depends on recent or company-specific facts the model has not seen, it requires careful numerical reasoning, or the stakes of a subtle error are high.
A useful habit is to ask the model to show its reasoning, list its assumptions and flag what it is unsure about, then check those points first. Another is to run the same question twice or through two different tools; disagreement is a cue to dig deeper. The frontier also moves as models improve, so a task that failed six months ago is worth retesting.
What managers should do
When AI skill stays with a few enthusiasts, the team gains little and risk rises as people use unapproved tools. Managers can close the gap by providing approved, business-grade tools, running short sessions where team members share workflows that work, setting clear rules on data and verification, and measuring outcomes such as cycle time and quality rather than tool usage.
